You know that you should limit your sugar consumption, as recommended by the National Program on Nutrition and Health (PNNS), because it has no nutritional benefit. However, the taste of sugar remains a pleasure that is sad to do without.

In terms of maintaining enjoyment with less inconvenience, could honey be a good alternative?

Both sugar and honey are mainly composed of glucose and fructose. But the proportions are different. Sugar contains 50% fructose and 50% glucose, while honey contains 40% fructose and 30% glucose.

The remaining 30% contains interesting nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, amino acids, antioxidants (flavonoids), enzymes, pollen, and vitamins B6 and C.

As for the heart? The glycemic index of honey is more interesting because it is lower than the glycemic index. Therefore, honey can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes, as confirmed by a recent study from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine.

Researchers reviewed 18 clinical studies to determine honey's effects on heart and metabolic risks.

Noticing them? Honey consumption is well associated with lower levels of bad cholesterol and triglycerides, which are themselves associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Two negatives

Honey has a higher level of calories per serving than sugar. Obviously, a teaspoon of honey contains 64 calories while the same amount of sugar contains only 49 calories. Be careful not to eat too much honey.

Finally, honey should be introduced after the infant's first year. In fact, it can contain the germs of a serious disease that affects children: botulism.

But for older children, there's no doubt that honey, while reasonable, is actually a better nutritional quality alternative to refined sugar.
