The United States has deployed an aircraft carrier and other warships to the eastern Mediterranean, near the Middle East, to help prevent the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas from escalating into a regional conflict.

Washington quickly provided military support to Israel after the attack launched by Hamas in Israel on October 7, which, according to Israeli officials, left more than 1,200 people dead.

Since then, the Israeli army has launched air, land and sea raids on the Gaza Strip, leaving, according to the Hamas Ministry of Health, more than 11,000 dead.
