An amateur French photographer managed to capture a photo of bioluminescence on the beaches of Sarzeaux in Brittany on July 9. This phenomenon is very rare on French beaches, and taking a picture is quite an achievement because the appearance is so unpredictable.

On his Facebook page, Richard John He explains that he went to the scene after another photographer posted: “ I tried my luck at Pointe de Penvins and was not disappointed. Not only was the phytoplankton’s electric glow phenomenon present and intense, but I got the added bonus of a beautiful Milky Way on my photos. After the light pollution went down (no one was left in the parking lot, the restaurant is closed and the only one in the world on this beach) the site became a real fireworks show.”. Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by some organisms: fireflies for example, but also by phytoplankton present in the first 40 meters of depth. whenrising (cold water upwelling) occurs, phytoplankton rise to the surface and begin to glow as waves toss them.
