Travel + Leisure conducted a comprehensive survey of its readers based on several criteria: the attractiveness of the beaches, nearby activities, the quality of the local restaurants and gastronomy, and also the hospitality of the locals. “For each characteristic, participants can choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average or average. The final ratings combine the averages of each of these answers,” the journal specifies.

The first place was taken by a Portuguese island. The big winner is actually Madeira located in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,000 kilometers southwest of Lisbon. The destination got five places compared to last year’s ranking.
So what are the origins of Madeira? Travel + Leisure readers praise the lush nature of the island, which is characterized by its cliffs and volcanic mountains. The city parks of Funchal, the capital, are also appreciated. “Madeira balances nature treks with other entertainment such as nightlife and restaurants,” explains one traveler.
It must be said that Madeira offers a rich and varied gastronomy starting with aspatada, skewers of beef, fish or seafood accompanied by cornmeal.
