The United Nations General Assembly proclaims the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development

On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring 2024-2033 the International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development.

In this resolution, the United Nations body declares this decade “within the limits of available means and resources, in order to give humanity a unique opportunity to benefit from the fundamental role played by science as one of the main means for the implementation of sustainable development.” In its three dimensions and facing the complex challenges of our time to ensure a secure and prosperous future for all.

The text calls on the international community to raise awareness of the importance of all sciences for achieving sustainable development, and to actively participate, in accordance with national priorities, in promoting a coordinated and concerted scientific approach that provides decision-makers with analyzes and solutions. Evidence-based data needed for effective policy development and implementation to ensure that no one is left behind.

By this resolution, the United Nations General Assembly also calls upon the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, in collaboration with other relevant agencies of the United Nations system, as well as with other stakeholders, including those participating in the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development, to lead Implement the contract by defining and developing activities and programs within their mandates and within the resources available to them and with the help of voluntary contributions.
