The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development appoints Canadian of Portuguese origin Alvaro Santos Pereira as Chief Economist

Economist Alvaro Santos Pereira was appointed chief economist at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on Thursday, effective June 1, replacing Britain's Claire Lombardelli.

Alvaro is a prominent economist who has worked in the Portuguese government as Minister of Economy and Employment, an OECD press release said on Thursday.

He takes over the position, succeeding Claire Lombardelli, who has held the position since May 2023.

Alvaro Santos Pereira previously held the position of interim chief economist of the international organization, which brings together 38 developed countries, twice, the last time between July 2022 and May 2023.

He was previously appointed Director of the Economic Policy Studies Branch in the Department of Economic Affairs in 2023.

The new chief economist, who joined the OECD in 2014, holds a PhD in economics from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby (Canada). He was Professor of Economic Development and Economic Policy at Simon Fraser University, and a lecturer at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and the University of York, United Kingdom, before holding positions in the Portuguese government.
