Portugal has blocked the sale of Abramovich’s mansion, according to press reports

LISBON (Reuters) – Portugal has blocked the sale of a 10-million-euro ($10.4 million) mansion owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has been targeted by sanctions over the war in Ukraine, the Publico newspaper reported on Saturday.

The property registry for the luxurious Quinta do Lago (Algarve) mansion was frozen on March 25 — meaning it cannot be changed — at the request of the State Department, a month after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Publico.

The ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. A spokesman for Roman Abramovich did not respond to multiple requests.

According to Pleiko, the former owner of Chelsea Football Club attempted to sell the property 15 days before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine through Delaware-based Millhouse Views LLC, which is owned by Millhouse LLC. , which manages its assets.

Publico said Portugal’s largest bank, Caixa Geral de Depositos, learned of the sale attempt and alerted authorities. The bank declined to comment.

Roman Abramovich has been sanctioned by the British government and the European Union for his relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The billionaire was granted Portuguese citizenship in April 2021 on the basis of a law granting citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula during the medieval Inquisition.
