Paulo Branco, the emblematic and indomitable producer of Franco-Portuguese cinema, embodies today one of the most important international figures in independent production. At the head of production houses in France and Portugal, he also founded the Lisbon and Sintra Film Festival which just celebrated its fifteenth edition. The meeting will be moderated by Philip Azoury.

After 40 years of his career, he talks about the way in which he has produced and known, since the beginning of the eighties, Portuguese cinema, directors and young people, whose many notable films have influenced European cinema to this day.

His career was particularly marked by intense collaboration, lasting 20 years, with Manuel de Oliveira and Joao Cesar Montero.

Paul BrancoBorn in Lisbon in 1950, he began his career as a producer in 1979 between Paris and Lisbon. A major player in the author’s cinema, he was famous for giving his first chance to many young directors who became great filmmakers. In 40 years, Paolo Branco has produced more than 300 films and worked with the world’s most famous filmmakers.

Philip Azoury, film critic at Liberation since 1998, also collaborates with Inrockuptibles and co-authors the “Discipline in Disorder” blog. He is a senior correspondent for Obsession, the Nouvel Observateur’s monthly cultural attache.
