Health: WHO recommendations on cervical cancer screening

On the sidelines of the month of January dedicated to cervical cancer awareness, the World Health Organization spoke on Wednesday, January 10, about awareness, the importance and interest of Congolese women in undergoing cervical cancer screening, stressing that screening and early diagnosis are also important, as rapid and effective treatment is necessary for this type of cancer.

“Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer if detected early. Regular screening is crucial to detect changes in the cervix that can develop into cancer if left untreated. The awareness, importance and interest of Congolese women in getting screened remains Cervical cancer is essential.

In another advertisement published by the same organization earlier this year, the main symptoms of cervical cancer mentioned were irregular bleeding (even after menopause), increased vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, and vaginal bleeding during intercourse.

Cervical cancer develops on a woman's cervix (the part that connects the vagina to the uterine cavity). Almost all cases of cervical cancer are associated with infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common sexually transmitted virus. Although most cases of HPV infection heal on their own and cause no symptoms, persistent infection can cause cervical cancer in women.
