Effective acupuncture to reduce pain

Acupuncture, stemming from traditional Chinese medicine, is used in community medicine and in hospitals. It is a complement to traditional medicine, in particular for the relief of chronic pain: back pain, arthritis, digestive disorders, stress, depression, migraine, etc.

Researchers from the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chengdu (China) wanted to test the effectiveness of acupuncture on Headache. For 32 weeks, they followed more than 200 patients with an average age of 43 years with chronic headaches. Half of them received 20 sessions of acupuncture over an eight-week period, while the other half (the placebo group) received lighter sessions where needles were only partially inserted. All were asked to rate their headache frequency before and during the follow-up period.

RESULTS*: Patients who received the ‘real’ acupuncture sessions noticed a significant reduction in the frequency of their headaches, with an average of 20 to 7 days of pain per month. Thus, the presence of annoying headaches is cut by more than half with this remedy! The control group also reported a reduction (23 to 12 days of pain per month), indicating that the needles were indeed effective in reducing headaches, even when placed superficially.
