Beijing wants to “enhance exchanges and cooperation” with London

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his British counterpart on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference that China and Britain should “strengthen exchanges and cooperation,” Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday.

Recent months have witnessed disagreements between Beijing and London over accusations of human rights violations and espionage.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced last month that it had sentenced a British man to prison on charges of espionage, and had previously protested Britain's support for pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong.

Wang told David Cameron on Friday that the two countries should “strengthen their strategic communications and play their role in enhancing security and maintaining peace,” Xinhua said.

Wang said the world faces challenges, including “the resurgence of the Cold War mentality, rampant protectionism, and a faltering economic recovery.”

In the face of these challenges, the two countries should “strengthen exchanges and cooperation and return bilateral relations to the path of healthy and stable development.”

Mr. Wang also met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday, holding what the Chinese Foreign Ministry described as “sincere, objective and constructive discussions.”

On Saturday, he is also scheduled to address the Munich conference, which brings together senior diplomatic and military officials from many countries each year and is seen in particular as a barometer of trans-Atlantic relations.
