Moving away from the documentary, the 34th edition of the Marseille Festival honors the surreal and hardcore films whose authors blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy, from Sardinia to São Paulo via Loir-et-Cher.

On the black screen of the white nightOh Marinero By Yohei YamakadoWe listen to the recitation seas, an early text by the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. A dialogue about long sleeplessness, in which the sound of the night lights evokes the sailor’s story and his dream. Because, like everyone else, he had two lives. Parallel, but indistinguishable. “His whole life became the life he had dreamed of. And he saw that it was impossible for there to be another life than that one. For he did not remember a single street, not a single silhouette, not even a gesture of his mother… And of the life he seemed to dream of, Everything was real, everything was there.

From the depths of the film’s blackness, a voice floats to its surface, trembling, playing at its own intimidation, managing to terrify itself to the point of asking the fatal question, both to him and to us: “Why can’t the sailor be the only real thing in all this, and we and everything here, just a dream he has?” If the Sailor, here, with Yohei Yamakado, a young Japanese filmmaker living in France, or here at FID, a younger film festival – 34 years old – in downtown Marseille, if the Sailor is the cinema, that we are all, night watchers or Vigils, stuck in his dream, what consequences can be drawn from this, for the time being? What do we do with our parallel lives, and which one do we wake up from?
