A dangerous blizzard began to intensify and threaten to turn into a hurricane Thursday as it lashes the Midwest and the Great Lakes, with damaging winds heading east and could endanger the holidays of millions of travelers.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne also reported a record low temperature Wednesday, with patrols responding to nearly 787 service calls, 196 driver assistance and 104 accidents in just 12 hours.

Many roads have also been closed. “Cars full of fuel, blankets, food and an emergency kit make a difference in such situations,” the national agency advised.

Temperatures are expected to rise by the end of the week and just before Christmas.
