A 20-year-old woman was killed when youths threw stones at cars

Three 18-year-olds who found nothing better than throwing large rocks at cars on the evening of April 19 will now face murder charges after the death of one of their victims.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado said Wednesday that it has completed an investigation into a series of wrongdoings that ended in the death of 20-year-old Alexa Bartell, leading to the arrest of suspects.

According to the police, the three accused threw large stones at moving cars on the evening of April 19. For about twenty minutes, they crashed into at least five vehicles, causing various damage to the first four vehicles, mainly windows or bodywork. One of the stones shattered the windshield, slightly injuring a motorist.

Things go wrong when Alexa Bartell hits the road at the wheel of a Chevrolet Spark, unaware of the danger that awaits her. A stone thrown by one of the suspects passed through the windshield, fatally hitting him.

“In the moments before her death, Alexa was talking on the phone with a friend when the line was cut. Alexa’s friend located her phone and drove to the exact location on Indiana Avenue. She found Alexa injured in her car, which was in a field on the side of the road,” the sheriff’s office said.

The three suspects – Josef Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Cheek and Zachary Kwak – are all 18 years old. They face charges of first degree murder and gross indifference. Authorities have warned that additional charges may be added.
