These villages have been voted the best villages in the world for 2024

Do you want to change your trip to popular cities like Barcelona, ​​Milan or London? You should take a look at the ranking of the best villages in the world created by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), whose goal is to promote “responsible, sustainable and accessible” tourism.

Open villages for sustainable development

This year, 54 villages were voted World’s Best Village out of 260 submissions. They were appointed during the UNWTO General Assembly, held last week in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. These localities were rewarded for “leading the way in developing rural areas and preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values ​​and culinary traditions.”

Several criteria were taken into account to determine the big winners such as the promotion and conservation of natural resources, economic, social and environmental sustainability, tourism development, but also conditions related to safety and health. Some countries have several villages in the final ranking, such as Peru (5 villages), China (4), Chile (3)… Nine European countries are in the ranking: Spain (3 villages), Portugal (3), Switzerland (2), Austria (2), Italy, Croatia, Hungary, Moldova and the Principality of Andorra with one village each.
