The motorist was fined and charged $27.5 million in court costs

A 20-year-old Belgian committed a traffic violation while driving on a provisional driver's license without a driver, and broke out in a cold sweat when he received a fine and court costs amounting to more than $27.5 million.

The young car driver, who was returning from Paris at the end of last August, crossed the center of Kortrijk in the middle of the night to commit a traffic violation, by crossing the red light, according to what the Belgian media 7Sur7 reported, citing the “Het Laatste Nieuws” website.

Police officers, who noticed that the driver was driving with a temporary license and unaccompanied, in addition to driving at night and running a red light, issued a fine of 960 euros (about 1,400 dollars).

“The crossroads and the streets were empty,” Father Al-Asbat told local media, before adding: “And then, you know, when you’re young, he ran the red light very excitedly and was spotted by a police patrol car.”

When the case reached court, legal fees were imposed on the suspect, who had to pay 19 million euros (more than 27.5 million dollars), a figure that astonished the young man’s parents, but it turned out to be an administrative error.
