StarTimes deepens partnership with Discovery and Fox

On June 29, 2018, StarTimes signed an agreement with media groups Discovery and Fox to deliver high-quality entertainment programming to African viewers via online television and video platforms.

Amanda Turnbull, Vice President and General Manager of Discovery, Middle East and Africa, and Janet Liu, Chief Content Officer of StarTimes, have signed an agreement to move three entertainment and arts channels from streaming. The deal will allow StarTimes subscribers to enjoy the best in family entertainment with Discovery Family access while crime and investigative thriller channel Discovery (ID) remains on the platform.

StarTimes and Discovery are also planning to launch a new lifestyle channel targeting women. Designed specifically for the modern African woman, Real Time will launch later this year.

Fox executive vice president Adam Theiler and Janet Liu, StarTimes chief content officer, have agreed to continue carrying Fox channels on the StarTimes platform. These channels are FOX Channel, FOX Life, FOX Sports, FOX Sports 2, National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild, Baby TV, and Voyage. It will be broadcast in English, French and Portuguese.

In addition, StarTimes will also offer content from Fox and National Geographic on its over-the-top (OTT) video platform. The video-on-demand services FOX+ and NG+ will join about 70 channels already available on the StarTimes app.

A pioneer in OTT (live streaming) in Africa, leading digital TV operator StarTimes is enriching its platform to meet the growing demand of African users. The StarTimes app was launched in partnership with 23 telecom operators and reaches 450 million people.
