Peter Navarro (74 years old) was sentenced last January to this term on charges of obstructing the investigative powers of Congress. In February 2022, he refused to attend the summons of the parliamentary committee that was investigating the events of January 6, 2021, and to provide it with documents.

On that day, hundreds of supporters of the outgoing Republican president stormed the Capitol building, the headquarters of the US Congress, in an attempt to prevent the certification of the victory of his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, in the 2020 elections.

Another former adviser to Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, a harbinger of right-wing populism, had already been sentenced to four months in prison in 2022 for the same facts, but was released pending his appeal.

The majority-conservative Supreme Court rejected a similar request from Peter Navarro on Monday, making his imprisonment inevitable.

Donald Trump was not directly concerned by the courts with the assault on the Capitol, although the investigative committee on January 6, 2021 recommended, in December 2022, that criminal proceedings be taken against him, particularly because of his call for rebellion and conspiracy against American institutions.

However, he was indicted in August 2023 by a federal court in Washington, and then by Georgia state courts for his alleged illegal attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
