“Operation Portugal 2: Life of the Castle”: a crazy and clumsy sequel

Three years after the delicious “Operation Portugal”, which had 450,000 entries, here is “Operation Portugal 2”. Or the return of Dajjal, the comedian of Moroccan origin who took to the stage thanks to his funny imitation of the Portuguese accent. In the first film, he played Hakim, a police officer of North African origin who is forced to infiltrate the Portuguese community to conduct an investigation. Along the way, he falls madly in love with Julia, a beautiful Lusitanian girl.

In this sequel, still directed by Frank Simmer, Hakim prepares to marry Julia, much to the despair of his mother and his fiancée's grandmother. But he finds himself forced to do it again: he must pretend to be a Portuguese (Joaquim, therefore) in front of the Count, who is also a rogue promoter, to steal his contracts because of which many families are in danger of being ruined…

We sometimes smile at Dijal's depression and his fake Portuguese accent that turns “hello” into “acquil” and “queue leo leo” into “colo.” We even enjoy it when Abu Dhabi becomes “Abu Dhabi”… and less when the Frisbee is called “Frispity”. Because that's the problem with “Operation Portugal 2”: the gags are so hammered that they become indigestible.

The joke about the Muslim who doesn't want to eat pork is worn to death, like the joke about the count's wife teasing Joachim. And we don't count the fights that follow one another… until the last, completely crazy, battle in the barrows. In this nonsensical scenario, the bad puns come in a flurry (“His arithmetic is good. Well, no, Count, it's not good, it's bad,” “What's a gay pig,” “He's a gay pig.”)
