Google Bard vs. ChatGPT, who won the AI battle?

That’s it, Bard is available in French. We were able to test it in many situations and also compare it with its natural competitor. what I say ? The Bard’s main assets are not necessarily what one would expect…

Let’s face it, many of us have been charmed by ChatGPT’s ingenuity. If not infallible, the OpenAI chatbot was great in many situations. Recent developments (such as plug-ins) have reinforced this impression. However, it should be recognized: if there is one point where ChatGPT is weak, it is in its interface. It is even surprising that such a futuristic tool has a “Spartan” look and does not make it easy to implement certain advanced functions, such as popular plug-ins.

Google Cool is neat

We tested ChatGPT in parallel with Google Bard – and it’s now available in French (in 40 languages in total). The first note is as follows: For a relatively similar quality of response, Bard is much more pleasing to the eye. Key word: it’s elegant. The design of the answers he gives us makes for interesting reading.

Some will say that this is not what is expected in the first place from an artificial intelligence gadget, but all the same, isn’t the convenience of use what made success from Apple?

More detailed answers than the free version of ChatGPT

Another point we noticed is that Bard’s answers are usually more detailed. We compared the Google tool to both versions of ChatGPT (free and paid). It seems :

  • Bard provides more complete answers than ChatGPT based on GPT 3.5;
  • Bard is roughly on par with the paid ChatGPT, which is based on GPT-4 (sometimes with a slight advantage for the latter when it comes to revision accuracy).

If we compare the two freeforms, Bard is often better, but not always. Thus, in questions about SEO (web page ranking well on Google), Bard was shy, very general, as if we’d broached a sensitive topic of home—Google doesn’t like that we seek to influence its results.

Cool isn’t always up to snuff

Just like ChatGPT, Bard sometimes gives nonsensical answers in its solutions lists. Example ? We asked him how he’s having a great day in San Francisco including making lunch on a $50 budget, including the ride to the airport. However, among his various answers, Bard suggests we take a taxi (“most practical”) for $50! In short, there are adjustments to be made in the Google tool’s AI. It remains that in most cases, his answers are more than honorable level.

Another surprising point: Bard does not use Google’s capabilities to respond to a request. To the question: Where can I find a good sushi restaurant in my neighborhood? Google immediately shows several institutions and also their location on the map, while Bard says he doesn’t know where I live. Still very curious.

If there was one point where Bard greatly disappointed us compared to ChatGPT, it was that it wasn’t able to fulfill a certain role, which ChatGPT does very well. For example, playing the role of a recruiter in a position and evaluating our responses. No matter how hard he tried to explain in every possible way what we expected of him, Bard did his best to formulate the questions as well as the answers. Therefore, at this level, it is far from ChatGPT.

Conclusion: A slight advantage in ChatGPT

Contrary to what was expected, this version does not contain an image creator tool. ChatGPT certainly does not have one, but it is integrated with Microsoft Bing, which is based on the Dall.e tool 2. Google announced the integration of Adobe Firefly with Bard, but at the moment this tool is not present in the French version and is therefore a weak point.

In conclusion, Bard is promising and its design is elegant, but ChatGPT maintains the feature at various points, especially in its paid version. However, such competition is desirable because it will force each of these tools to perform at their best.
