Fake Botox injections: A call for vigilance after two hospitalizations

American authorities called on citizens to be extremely careful when considering cosmetic treatment, after two clients of an unlicensed Botox nurse were forced to be hospitalized in the state of Illinois.

“Receiving these treatments in unlicensed and unaccredited settings can put you or your loved ones at risk for health problems,” Dr. Samir Vohra, the state’s public health director, said Monday in a press release, according to NBC News.

US media reported that warnings about medical procedures performed at unregulated medical spas are increasing across the country as more citizens turn to clinics that offer these services without the necessary training.

This time, it was the state of Illinois that sounded the alarm, after two patients were hospitalized after being injected with Botox “or possibly a counterfeit version of the product,” offered by a nurse who “acted outside the scope of her authority,” the Department of Health said. Both patients had to be hospitalized after developing symptoms similar to botulism, an illness caused by toxins produced by several bacteria, including Clostridium botulinum.

American media said that among the symptoms, two Illinois residents noticed “blurred double vision, facial drooping, fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and hoarseness.”
