Trudeau and Zelensky speak on the phone on New Year's Eve

(OTTAWA) – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his “condolences” to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a phone call Monday, as Ukraine faces attacks from Russia for the second winter in a row.


In a report summarizing the conversation between the two leaders, the Prime Minister's Office said Mr. Trudeau used the call to offer condolences, on behalf of Canadians, “for the senseless deaths in Ukraine due to increasingly powerful indiscriminate attacks by Russia, particularly against critical civilian infrastructure like apartments and schools.” And hospitals.

He added, “The two leaders discussed the situation on the ground and Ukraine's needs for the coming months.” They highlighted the close cooperation between Canada and its partners to meet Ukraine's needs, particularly with regard to macroeconomic support and military assistance to Ukraine.

He added: “Prime Minister Trudeau affirmed Canada's commitment to continue working with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with everything it needs, for as long as it takes.”

Last Friday, Mr. Trudeau and several federal government ministers came to Ukraine's defense on social media, after a major operation during which Russia fired about a hundred missiles at several Ukrainian cities, killing at least 30 people.

During their call on Monday, MM. Trudeau and Zelensky also took the opportunity to exchange greetings at the beginning of the new year.

Mr. Trudeau is currently in Jamaica, where he is vacationing with his family.
