In total, 230 representatives must be elected in 22 electoral districts. 18 political movements are competing in the legislative elections, three fewer than in the 2019 and 2022 elections.

According to opinion polls, the Social Democratic Party, the main opposition party, appears to be in the lead at the moment. However, the detailed results of the vote should be announced a few hours after the closing of the polls, which took place at eight in the evening.

Early elections were called for Sunday, March 10, after Prime Minister Antonio Costa resigned from the Socialist Party in November 2023.

Mr Costa's resignation came over allegations of corruption in lithium and hydrogen mining contracts, prompting the Attorney General's Office to open an investigation.

Two days after President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa accepted the Prime Minister's resignation, the head of the Social Democratic Party announced the dissolution of Parliament and called for new legislative elections.
