The Alérion Supermileage team won the challenge, which was held in June in Marshall, Michigan. Its engineering student members have won more than 17 other teams from Canada, the United States, Portugal and the United Arab Emirates.
Team Laval achieved one more fuel-efficient race with its skinny three-wheeler. The driver completed six laps on the 2.5 km track in 38 minutes. It covered the distance at an average speed of 35 km / h, with peaks of 45 km / h. This is the sixth victory since 2010 for Alérion Supermileage.
In the preparatory phase, the local team faced many different and uncontrollable technical challenges. First, remote studies during the pandemic did not allow the usual transfer of knowledge with graduates of previous training. Then, preparing the car required solving many electronic problems. Finally, the day before the race, the organizers demanded compliance with the regulation requiring the complete replacement of the electrical system.
Great fuel economy
At the end of its track run, the Alérion Supermileage race car had limited its fuel consumption to nearly 15g. By extrapolation, competition judges estimated this to equate to 1,557 mpg (miles per US gallon). The score earned him the highest podium step, more than 500 mpg behind his nearest competitor.
