Orban says Trump “will not give a dime” to Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, returning from the US, claimed Donald Trump had assured him he would “never give a dime” to Ukraine – a statement to which the former US president's team had no comment on Monday.

Orban, the only EU leader to maintain close ties with the Kremlin despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine, met with the Republican candidate on Friday in his Florida stronghold.

He added: “He has a very clear vision, and it is difficult to disagree with it. He says this: First, he will not give a dime in the war between Ukraine and Russia” if he returns to the White House, the nationalist leader said Sunday evening on the public channel M1.

If the Americans did not pay, the Europeans would not be able to finance this war on their own. He added: “Therefore, the war will end,” because “it is clear that Ukraine cannot get out of this situation on its own.”

The billionaire has “fairly detailed plans on how” to bring about peace, according to Viktor Orbán, who declined to reveal more.

In response to a question from Agence France-Presse, Trump's team did not make any comment.

Donald Trump himself did not comment on the content of the interview, which was criticized by his rival, Joe Biden.

Viktor Orban, who met Russian President Vladimir Putin in September 2023, refuses to send any military support to Ukraine and regularly calls for a ceasefire, convinced that Kiev cannot win.

Likewise, Donald Trump is pushing his supporters in Congress to block $60 billion in US military aid to Kiev, which President Biden has championed.
