Opened on April 30, the new Center for Oncology, Radiotherapy and Neuroradiosurgery of Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) combines in one place the latest generation of particle accelerators and Gamma Knife. This device allows you to perform operations on the brain without opening the skull. The first is in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Half of all cancer patients are treated with radiotherapy at some point in their care journey. In this context, Hospices Civils de Lyon has chosen to invest significantly in this constantly evolving specialty. This new center for oncology, radiotherapy and neuroradiosurgery of Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) is located near the Pierre Wertheimer Neurological Hospital (Bron).

The location of the new center allows the hospital to be brought closer to the patient, ensuring clinical and geographical coordination with the aim of always providing better and optimal care, while respecting the patient. “, explains Professor Olivier Chapet.

The Gamna Knife, the first of its kind in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Center for Radiotherapy and Neurosurgery and Radio-Oncology has the first Gamma Knife device in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This advanced neuroradiological surgery device has been in operation since January 17, 2023, and uses gamma rays to deliver a very high dose of radiation to very specific areas of the brain, while sparing sensitive areas in the periphery. Gamma Knife's access to the HCL facilitates the care of patients in the area affected by brain diseases, whether benign or malignant.
