In the intentions of the Portuguese directors from Ligoa (a small town located west of Porto), it is noted that the film is a picture of the end of the ancient world. To be fair, we should specify that it is above all about a 49-year-old woman, Anna, who helps old Emilia look after an old bourgeois residence that the owners no longer frequent. In the absence of her husband who went to work…

Screened at the Filmmakers' Fortnight during the recent Cannes Film Festival, Légua is one of those slow-paced films that gives the false impression of being devoid of action, but proves to be quite rich when you look at it carefully. A Portuguese film produced by a director/director duo that comes from documentaries and of which Légua is only the second fictional film, Légua has a lot of…

Ligoa is a village in northern Portugal. In Légua's film, this village is the only place, in particular, a large house whose owners live in Lisbon. A beautiful picture of the northern Portugal countryside that you should take the time to fully appreciate. We feel the strength, vitality and perfection of the wonderfully played female characters in a world planned against the backdrop of social inequality. Very beautiful shots, realistic and sober play, like a still life painted by an artist's hand.

childhood memories

Légua is the name of a small village in northern Portugal where João Miller Guerra's family has a house where he spends most of his summers. Although he had fond memories of the times he spent in this house, as an adult, he began to think about the meaning of this mansion, “the lives of the people who lived there, and the social and economic structures that existed there. They were supported by the human relationships that were formed.” there

Passing seasons

Filming took place over several seasons throughout the year, to convey the passage of time, and to show a cycle in which death is an integral part. “We wanted to approach the idea of transformation rather than death as an end. We are all made of matter and are constantly changing, whether we are humans or animals, just like plants and stones, each with its own time,” explains Philippa Rees.
