How to update Backbone controller to USB-C for gaming with iPhone 15?

The Backbone One iPhone controllers are very efficient, and if you bought the USB-C model of the iPhone 15 during Prime Day – it was on sale for €90 Instead of 120 euros -You may have had a surprise: the controller is not compatible with iPhones. In fact, the manufacturer has announced that an update is necessary, and the controllers currently offered commercially are not necessarily up to date.

The main visible difference is the presence of a USB-C socket (right)

This is the case with our model: it arrived with firmware 1.1.4 and therefore did not work with the iPhone. In this case, there are two solutions: Contact support For a change…or look for an Android smartphone with a USB-C socket, which is very common.

At first (right), the controller didn’t work on my iPhone. Switching to Android allowed for a firmware update.

The firmware update is a bit unusual: the (mandatory) Backbone app is actually less polished and complete in Android than in iOS. To be honest, there aren’t even menus for updating the firmware, the whole thing is actually automated and barely visible. In our case, we installed the smartphone in its cradle, gave the various permissions to the application and waited a few minutes. We then disconnected and reconnected the console to verify that the update was complete. This was indeed the case, as it quietly moved from version 1.1.4 to 1.2.4 and iPhone compatibility requires at least version 1.2.2. Since there are no custom menus, all you have to do is wait and hope that the app does its work in the background, without any special notifications.

With updated firmware, it is recognized on iPhone.

Once the firmware was updated, the console was recognized perfectly by the Backbone app and the various games we were able to try out. The controller therefore has the same advantages and disadvantages as the Lightning version: everything is responsive, powerful and complete, but the controller is still a bit expensive (120 euros). Likewise, some may criticize the lack of vibration and gyroscope, and the asymmetrical layout of the analog sticks. The USB-C version still corrects two flaws of the Lightning version. The first is obvious: USB-C is more practical and more durable. The second comes from the socket: the output power is much lower in the USB-C variant and this is good news, because the minimum level of the Lightning controller was very high.

Finally, according to the brand, the consoles should be delivered quickly with the appropriate iPhone firmware, which will avoid having to perform an update on an Android smartphone.
