Mrs. Abraham is in critical condition. “She is receiving treatment in our emergency department, due to the serious lack of care during her detention in recent weeks by Hamas,” Shlomi Kodesh, director of Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, told reporters in southern Israel.

He added, “Her life is in danger and she will be transferred to the intensive care unit, where we hope her condition will stabilize and improve.”

The old woman, an artist, was kidnapped late in the morning on October 7 when Hamas fighters stormed her home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, during the bloody attack carried out by the Palestinian movement in Israeli territory.

The Israeli military estimates that 240 hostages were taken into the Gaza Strip that day.

According to her son, Uri Rawitz, who she spoke to in the morning, the octogenarian man was unable to lock the door to the safe room in her home. Uri will then receive a photo of his mother being taken away on a motorcycle by armed fighters along with another hostage.

Elma Abraham is part of a group of 17 hostages, including 14 Israelis, who were released on Sunday, after seven weeks in captivity, on the third day of a truce in the war between Hamas and Israel, under which 39 Palestinian prisoners were released.

This is the third time that Israeli and foreign hostages have been released within three days, within the framework of this truce that has been in effect since Friday and is supposed to end on Monday evening.
