A dog was injured by a “festive gunshot” on New Year's Day in the United States

A dog was shot on New Year's Eve in Georgia, after being struck by “festive gunshots” believed to have been fired by someone attending a fireworks party.

A man was attending a New Year's party in Savannah, Georgia, when his pet suddenly started jumping, and his owner noticed that the sweater his dog was wearing was dyed red and had a hole somewhere, CNN reported.

“I knew it was possible, but I didn't think it was possible,” says Frank, the owner of the dog named Gus. I realized that if it were me sitting there, I would probably be dead.

X-ray imaging identified the location of the bullet in the pet's hip.

Five days later, Gus was able to move around as if he had never been hurt.

Savannah Police say what happened on New Year's Eve constitutes a shooting.

“When we respond to a call of shots fired, we don't take it lightly, we tell ourselves this is New Year's Day and people are having fun,” explains Police Officer Jessica Pippin. “It is against the law.”

Authorities responded to about 15 calls of shots fired in this area early on the morning of January 1.
