The Egyptian authorities said that a shark killed a Russian on Thursday off the coast of the Egyptian city of Hurghada on the Red Sea.

The Egyptian Ministry of Environment said on Facebook that “a shark attack on a man (…) led to his death,” without providing further details.

Russian media said the victim was a Russian in his twenties.

Russian Consul General Viktor Vorobiev told the official Russian news agency TASS that the Egyptian authorities confirmed the death of a Russian citizen, born in 1999.

He told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the victim was not a tourist, but a permanent resident of Egypt.

In a video posted on social media and purportedly showing the incident, a person appears to be struggling to escape from a shark.

Egypt’s Ministry of the Environment said the shark was caught and its examination revealed “abnormal behavior … that caused the accident”.

He added that swimming and water games will be suspended for two days, starting from Friday.

The Red Sea is an important tourist destination in Egypt. Sharks are not uncommon there, but they rarely attack swimmers if they do not go beyond the permissible limits.

In July 2022, two tourists, an Austrian and a Romanian, are killed by a shark near Hurghada.

And in 2018, a Czech tourist was killed by a shark off an Egyptian beach in the Red Sea, and a German was killed in 2015 and a German woman in 2010.
