More than two million liters lost: a torrent of red wine rushes through the Portuguese streets

It was not a flood of water, but red wine, that struck a small Portuguese village on Sunday, when an accident occurred in the vats of a distillery and more than two million liters of wine leaked.

In the pictures circulating on social media, it is possible to believe that it is a stream of water, but the red color of the liquid indicates the problem.

The impressive spill occurred in the streets of São Lourenço do Bairro, a small town between Porto and Lisbon, where the Livera distillery is located, reported the Diaro de Coimbra website.

Two tanks at the distillery suddenly exploded, causing a leak that alarmed local authorities, who particularly feared contamination of a nearby river.

“We take full responsibility for the costs associated with repairs and cleanup of the damage. We are doing everything we can to resolve the situation as quickly as possible,” the distillery responded.

No injuries were reported in the incident, but the basements of nearby homes were flooded.
