Israel and Gaza at war: Amnesty International concerned about civilians

Amnesty International, concerned with human rights, called on the Israeli security forces and Palestinian armed factions to protect civilians, according to CNN.

Amnesty International wants both sides to do “everything in their power to protect civilian lives when fighting breaks out in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.”

“We are deeply concerned about the growing number of civilian casualties in Gaza, Israel and the occupied West Bank, and we urgently call on all parties to the conflict to respect international law and do everything in their power to prevent further civilian bloodshed.” The authority said in a statement.

Amnesty International stressed the importance of international law, because targeting civilians and “carrying out disproportionate attacks that lead to the killing or wounding of civilians constitute war crimes.”

“Under international humanitarian law, all parties to a conflict have a clear obligation to protect the lives of civilians caught up in hostilities,” said the organization’s Secretary-General, Agnes Callamard.
