French rap, from reality to science fiction

A leather jacket, big sunglasses and the face of someone who hasn’t listened to the morning show on a Tarmac… It’s not the starter pack for your next funeral but a quick draw for Laylow’s favorite fictional character: Neo.

In the Matrix film series, Keanu Reeves plays Thomas Anderson (aka Neo). He is the Chosen One of the Prophecy, the one who is supposed to free humanity from the machines and their Matrix, a vast simulation of reality in which humans are stuck. And that, you guessed it, inspired generations of rappers.

Laylow is certainly the most telling example. from his album TrinityFrom the name of a female character in the movie who here takes on the role of Software, to Mr. Anderson, the omnipresent alter ego of his latest project, Laylow has created a heavily focused DA on the Matrix trilogy. Ditto for Wald, a big fan of conspiracy theories, who saw in the Matrix a way to symbolize a hidden truth over his nickname “Neo”.

Today, it is a frequent gimmick for many artists. The Matrix has become a way of representing the system from which they must escape. This perception is also expressed through the number of references to The Truman Show in which Jim Carrey is, without knowing it, a reality TV actor. Obviously, many artists imagine themselves in the shoes of Neo or Truman, the Chosen One and hero of the story who seeks to escape the system, but this is not the case for everyone. SF is also an opportunity to play a very special role.
