Boavista surprises Benfica in a crazy game

In a completely crazy scenario, Boavista inflicted the first defeat of the season (3 – 2) on SL Benfica on the first day of the tournament.

La Liga Portugal is special and it was this evening too. The meeting between Boavista and SL Benfica on the first day ended in dramatic fashion. Goals, red cards, reflections galore: we are in perhaps one of the most incredible games of recent years in Portugal.

A (very) quiet start to the SL Benfica match

These are reddish casual who appeared on the field. The latter controlled the tempo during the onset of this shock and was able to position the metronome when necessary. The sinister job was done by Rafa Silva. The striker set up the second goal and counterattacked at full speed to serve Angel Di Maria: he opened the scoring with thanks the video (22′).

Boavista tried to retaliate with repeated attacks, but they proved too harmless.

After the calm comes the storm

the BenfiQuests intends to continue this momentum in the second half. However, one incident immediately changed the dynamic of the evening. In his delight at getting the ball back, Petar Musa (inadvertently) crushed Rodrigo Abascal’s ankle. Referee’s decision is final: red card (50′). The Panthers took advantage of the moment of hesitation title holder immediately equalized by Robert Poznick (55º).

Reduced to 10, Roger Schmidt’s men gave everything they could to stand up front. After a great period of control, they managed to spot the breakthrough: once again it was Rafa Silva who came to the rescue and put the ball into the back-netting (75′).

So we were headed for an SLB victory. And then, at the end of the organization’s time, came the tragedy of the people of Lisbon. After another dangerous exit from Odysseas Vlachodimos put his defense in trouble and forced Antonio Silva to cut Jeriel De Santis: a penalty for the locals and converted by Bruno Lourenço (90′). Happy on this occasion, unhappy on another: the Portuguese midfielder was sent off before the final whistle for a dangerous foul on Florentino Luis (101′).

Did this expulsion hurt Boavista? Absolutely not, on the contrary. Eagles wanted so much to fly so high that they ended up losing their feathers. In the last moments of the match: losing the ball in the heart of the match, and there was no one left in defense, the voracious player Robert Boznik allowed himself to score a brace and bring the three points to his team. A screenplay worthy of a Steven Spielberg movie.

In just under a week, Benfica went from Super Cup champions against arch-rivals to a tragic defeat at the start of La Liga. Football is unpredictable and that is what gives it its beauty.
