A citizen of Ashkelon, Sami Goldberg, woke up startled by the sound of gunfire on Saturday.

“We woke up this morning at 6:30 a.m. to the sound of a continuous volley of gunfire. We had to go to shelters. You should know that housing standards in Israel mean that each house, in principle, is equipped with a private room.”

Mr. Goldberg remained in this room with his family, without electricity or air conditioning, for much of the day.

Citizens were prevented from leaving. Sami said that Israeli authorities told them that “terrorists are likely to enter homes.”

He added: “This is the climate of anxiety in which we live. Less than an hour ago, we still had the right to fire missiles at Ashkelon.”
