Residents are provided with the opportunity to participate in science, innovation, technology and indigenous knowledge-based activities.

THUNDER BAY — Residents enjoyed an event that celebrated and highlighted science at Intercity Mall this weekend.

The 12thy The annual Science Festival, hosted by Science North, held a Science Carnival on Saturday to round off a week of events, exhibits and activities.

“When we started, we had Sound Science with the Tamarack Quintet. We had a Snow Day event with the city of Thunder Bay. We had a Youth Climate Action Summit this week,” said Monica Brodanek, a STEM specialist at Science North Thunder Bay. .

“We had a geek night out at the Sleeping Giant Brewery, then capped off the whole week with our big event at the end – the Science Carnival.”

The carnival included more than 30 exhibitors who presented practical demonstrations that gave families the opportunity to participate in science, innovation, technology and activities based on local knowledge.

Visitors also enjoyed scientific presentations by Science North, and were able to watch demonstrations on various topics including how the human body works.

There's something for everyone to enjoy, Brodanik said.

“We have a lot of young people (visiting), but it's also for people of all ages. Obviously we like for the kids to come out and have a good time, but it's also for everyone, too,” she said.

“We love to have some seniors who say, 'Hey, science's not quite for me, but you know what? They come to these events and realize that everything is science. We love having kids participate in all of our activities, games and experiments.'
