The burning, the video of which went viral on social networks, is “an expression of the growing anger within the American people” over the Israeli war on Gaza, the Palestinian Islamic Movement announced in a press release published in English.

Hamas believes that this soldier “will remain immortal in the memory of Palestinians and free people all over the world, and a symbol of the spirit of global human solidarity with our people and their just cause.”

The video shows a man in military uniform declaring in front of the Israeli embassy gate that he will not be “an accomplice to genocide in Palestine,” before dousing himself with liquid and setting himself on fire while shouting, “Free Palestine!” And falls to the ground.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but died on Monday.

The Air Force confirmed he was an active member, without providing further details.

This work comes at a time when protests are increasing in the United States against the devastating Israeli military attack on the Gaza Strip.

The war broke out on October 7 when Hamas commandos from Gaza launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing at least 1,160 people, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli data.
