About the size of a golf ball: See the record-breaking raspberry

A raspberry from New South Wales in Australia has been crowned the heaviest raspberry in the world according to Guinness World Records, despite weighing more than 10 times the average weight of a regular raspberry.

“When we put it on the scale, I was a little shocked. “I knew it was big, but I had to double check,” said Brad Hocking, director of berries at Costa Group, an Australian fruit and vegetable producer, The Guardian reported on Friday. “.

The fruit was officially crowned, on Tuesday, as the heaviest berry in the world in the Guinness Book of World Records, after it was picked on November 13 at one of the company’s farms in Corindi, in the southern state of New Wales, as the latter announced in a press release.

The Costa variety, which was the size of a golf ball with a diameter of 39.31mm, still weighed 20.40g once placed on the scales, which would be more than 10 times the size of a regular raspberry.

The previous record was held by a company from Western Australia, which served a 16.20-gram berry in 2020.

The world's heaviest berry will be part of a new range called Eterna, developed by the company, which will contain larger and crunchier fruits.

“Eterna, as a variety, has a very good flavor and consistently large fruit. When we picked this berry, there were probably about twenty other berries of similar size,” the director continued in a press release.

But while the company was genuinely keen to hold the record and that there was “always potential for expansion”, it will instead focus on trying to improve other agronomic traits of its fruit, including their heat tolerance or resistance to pests and disease. He told The Guardian.
