Seoul, January 18th. (Yonhap) — Director Yoon Sang-ho said Wednesday that he wants to mix Korean melodrama and sci-fi with an artificial intelligence background in his upcoming Netflix movie “Jung_E.”

Set in the 22nd century, the dystopian film centers on an ambitious project to create a perfect combat artificial intelligence using the brains of a legendary warrior, Yoon Jung-e (Kim Hyun-joo), and is led by her daughter, Seo-hyun. Played by the late actress Kang Soo Young).

Yoon, who directed the popular Netflix series “Hellbound” (2021) and the zombie movie “Train to Busan” (2016), said he wanted to create a simple story that could be thought-provoking with many themes.

“Aside from the fact that the movie is science fiction, I think it deals with a universal theme that audiences can easily accept,” Yoon said during an interview with several media outlets held at a coffee shop in Seoul. Two days before the movie was released worldwide on Netflix.

“I wanted to mix classic Korean melodrama with science fiction,” he said.

Of his film’s visual aspect, he said, “It doesn’t look like sci-fi movies that follow modern trends, but it does have a kind of classic sci-fi look that I like.”

Yoon said the film means a lot to him because it is his first and last work with late actress Kang Soo-yeon, who died of cardiac arrest in May 2022 while post-production was still underway.

The director said Jung_E is similar to Kang’s personal story, which began at the age of four, and starred in a number of internationally acclaimed films and popular TV dramas throughout his five-year career. contracts.

“When the movie was completed, I felt it reflected Kang’s story,” Yoon said. “After his death, it became a special movie that had something to do with my fate.”

Yoon also showed his confidence in Kim Hyun-joo, who plays several roles in the film: a mother, a warrior, and a combat AI.

Since Kim had already undergone extensive training for the Netflix series “Hellbound,” Yoon was sure she would be ready for the fight scenes.

“Actually, Jung_E’s photo was ambiguous at first, but I gained confidence after seeing (Kim’s) hairstyle and fashion tests,” he said. “She was perfect for a mother and warrior figure.”
