Zelensky sacks the attorney general and chief of security

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced, on Sunday evening, the dismissal of the Prosecutor General and the head of the country’s security services due to multiple suspicions of treason by some of their subordinates in favor of the Russians.

“Today I took a decision to relieve Prosecutor General” Irina Venediktova “and head of the security services Ivan Bakanov from their duties,” the Ukrainian president said in his evening speech.

He added that the Ukrainian authorities are investigating more than 650 cases of suspected treason by local officials, including 60 cases in areas occupied by Russian and pro-Russian forces.

“Such a large number of crimes against national security institutions and the connections that exist between Ukrainian law enforcement officials and the Russian special services raise very serious questions for the leaders involved,” Zelensky said.

He continued, “Each of these questions will be answered.”

Ms. Venediktova in particular led the investigation of the alleged atrocities committed at the beginning of the invasion by Russian forces in the town of Bucha, a northwest suburb of Kyiv, which in the eyes of the West became a symbol of “Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
