Windows 11, Mica and Mica Alt effects are performance-boosting solutions

Windows 11 22H2 will introduce many new features including a file explorer that supports tabs. Microsoft is also planning to adapt its design with its new features with the effect of “Mica Alt”.

It’s not really a novelty because it’s a form of the mica effect. Its purpose is to be more suitable for tabbed applications. Mica offers a rendering close to the “acrylic” effect but requires fewer resources. To find out, simply open the Windows 11 Start Menu. The background appears translucent, revealing the tints of the background and windows in the background. In fact, this is not the case, it is opaque in order to rest the machine and speed up the application process. The operating system gains efficiency through faster and more dynamic manipulations.

The acrylic effect is part of the Fluent Design progression found in Windows 10. We have a semi-transparent display applied to certain interface elements like windows for example. This disguise, while fun, is unfortunately resource intensive, especially on the graphics solution side (dGPU or iGPU). It can affect the performance of the computer. Mika was born to try to solve this situation. It simulates the effect of acrylic and requires fewer PC resources. It is a “chromatic hierarchy” solution to distinguish between multiple open instances of the same application. Its “Mica Alt” variant is designed to make it easier to distinguish between open tabs of the same app.

Microsoft . explains

Mica Alt is available for applications using Windows App SDK 1.1 or later, while running on Windows 11 v22000 or later. […] Mica Alt is an alternative to Mica as a base layer in your application hierarchy with the same features as idle and active states and fine customization”

Mica Alt can also be used to provide contrast between some title bar elements and command areas. Microsoft promises that performance will always be a top priority.
