American legend Serena Williams suffered a 5-7, 7-6, 1-6 three-set loss in the third round of the US Open to Agla Tomljanovic in what may be the last game of her illustrious career.
“I tried, but she played better. Thanks dad, thanks mom. Thank everyone who’s been by my side here all these years. But it all starts with my dad. And I wouldn’t be Serena without Venus And I wouldn’t be Serena if it wasn’t for Venus. It’s the only reason Serena Williams is there,” Williams admitted in tears after the match.
“Oh my God, thank you so much. You were amazing today. I tried. It was a beautiful adventure, the most beautiful of my life. I am so grateful.”
Although everything seemed to point to retirement, Williams didn’t shut the door on return.

After losing the first set, Williams showed plenty of character to bring the Australian into the tiebreak and force the final set at the end.
Williams suffered three outages in the third set, and was unable to recover the damage. Williams saved five match points before giving up.
“I feel sorry that I love Serena as much as you do. What she did for me and for tennis is incredible. I never thought I would have the chance to meet her at her last match when I watched her when I was young,” said Tomljanovic.
During his 26-year career, Williams won 73 titles, 23 of which were in the Grand Slams. She won the US Open 6 times, Wimbledon 7 times, the Australian Open 7 times, and the French Open 3 times at Roland Garros.
The American has won more major singles tournaments than anyone else in the modern era, male or female. Margaret Court holds the record for 24 Grand Slam titles, but has won some during the amateur era.
