US Congress | Vote to release Trump’s tax returns

(WASHINGTON) US lawmakers are set to vote on Tuesday to determine whether to release Donald Trump’s tax returns, a release that would end years of the former president’s legal battle to keep them private.

The Republican leader, who has started a new race for the White House for 2024, has not declared tax slips, unlike all his predecessors since the 1970s, which has raised many questions about their content.

A House committee, sitting especially on tax matters and with a Democratic majority until the inauguration of a new Republican majority in early January, must vote behind closed doors on Tuesday afternoon on whether or not to publish Mr. trump.

This group of elected officials has been demanding for three years the documents that the billionaire sent to the tax authorities between 2015 and 2020, which he refused. The Supreme Court finally ruled in their favor at the end of November.

So far only a few elected officials have been able to read it.

The lack of transparency of Donald Trump, who has made his wealth an argument in his campaign, has fueled speculation for years about the extent of his wealth or potential conflicts of interest.

His family’s company, The Trump Organization, was found guilty in early December of financial and tax fraud after a trial in New York where the former Republican president did not stand trial.

Kevin Brady, the committee’s elected Republican, warned before the vote that a potential publication would “open the door” for parliamentarians “to have almost unlimited powers to attack their political enemies by getting their own tax returns publicly released.”

They add, “Even if the Democrats assert that it is not political,” a statement from Republican-elect continues, “their eagerness to release the documents in an accelerated and clumsy process shows that their motives are indeed political.”

Elected Democrats have not ruled out announcing this tax data immediately after Tuesday’s vote, if it is positive.
