In response to a question during a press conference about the possible use of such weapons for the bombing of Kyiv, Ms. Venediktova replied that she had “no concrete evidence” of their use in the capital and that “investigations” were ongoing.

“But (…) we have evidence of the use of cluster bombs in the Odessa region (a large Ukrainian port on the Black Sea, editor’s note) and in the Kherson region,” the city captured by the Russian army, was immediately added.

“We see, especially thanks to your work, you journalists, that other prohibited weapons are being used, but as for me, I can only mention cases in which I have evidence on a very concrete basis. For example (…) fragments (of these machines) ) or an analysis of the land,” she continued, without providing further details.

International NGOs, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have claimed to have collected evidence of cluster munition use in areas hosting civilians in Ukraine.

Such weapons can contain several dozen bomblets spread over a wide area, but not all of them explode, turning into anti-personnel mines, which, at the slightest contact, can kill and maim even after a long period of conflict.
