Ukraine accuses Russia of inhumane treatment of prisoners of war

On Monday, Lyudmila Denisova, a human rights official in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, said that Ukrainian soldiers captured and recently released by the Russian army reported “inhuman treatment” they were subjected to in captivity.

“Ukrainian soldiers recounted the inhuman treatment they were subjected to from Russia,” she denounced on Facebook, referring in particular to various types of physical attacks.

“They were put in a field, in a pit, in a garage. Regularly, one would go out: beaten with his butt, and shooting victims at ear level, intimidated,” continues Ms. Denisova.

Referring to the sailors captured in the early days of the invasion on Snake Island in the Black Sea, she said they were “kept in a tent at -20°C, which resulted in frostbite on a lot of the boys” and that the dog was left at large in their camp .

Ukraine and Russia have acknowledged two prisoner exchanges so far, on March 24.

One of them relates to the release of 19 Ukrainian sailors from Snake Island against 11 civilian sailors who survived a Russian ship that sank near Odessa (south); The other ten soldiers from each country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry had said earlier that two other exchanges had been organized since the start of the invasion, without specifying their dates or the number of prisoners involved.
