Stool: Invalid transplant, but effective

So irritable bowel syndrome (or IBS) can be relieved for at least three years thanks to this transplant, according to the latest study in Running, Posted on June 14 in review Gastrointestinal Diseases. Knowing that this is a problem that affects about 10% of the world’s population, it is easier to see why the benefits outweigh the slight feeling of disgust.

Because the term says what it is: It involves transplanting stool – a small portion – from the intestine of a “healthy” person into the intestine of a “sick” person. And also, above all, the bacteria that come with these droppings. Hoping that these healthy bacteria will take over from the bacteria that are unable to do their job in the patient.

Irritable bowel syndrome can, in addition to feeling tired and achy, lead to constipation and diarrhea. Medicines can reduce pain, but they don’t solve the problem either This imbalance in the ‘ecosystem’ of microbes from the intestine.

Best of all, in the case of this study, conducted in Norway, a single donor, a 36-year-old man selected for the “ideal number” of gut microbes, was enough to perform 87 transplants. In other words, if the technology spreads, we might not have the same donor shortage problem that we find elsewhere.

These 87 people received a small sample of donor stool mixed with water, in the small intestine (or small intestine). Another 38 got a placebo – which in this case means their own faecal transplant. Three years laterAt least two-thirds of the first group had fewer symptoms, compared to a quarter of the placebo group. The patients with the most severe symptoms were those who responded best. Analysis of the “ecosystem” confirms that the “demographics” of the bacteria have indeed changed, indicating that long-term colonization from their new environment.
