Two seaside homes in North Carolina have been swept away by the waves…and they might not be the last.
Cape Hatteras National Beach warns that other properties could similarly collapse in the coming days.
The houses in Rodanthe were unoccupied at the time of the accidents. Extreme temperatures may be the cause.
Rising waters and erosion are particularly common around the edge of Cape Hatteras Island.
According to an organization in the affected area, more than a dozen homes could collapse next fall.
The nearby road is open, but authorities are asking the public not to approach the scene of the accident and to drive “with extreme caution”.
The locals were also asked to clean the beach of debris picked up by the wind and waves.
