This year, the Zones Portuaires Festival is once again heading to the Mediterranean to settle in Lisbon. Guest programmers Luisa Homem, Pedro Pinho, and João Matos take us on a journey into the heart of Portugal’s capital and coastal city.

Through 18 performances and 25 films, the program addresses several global themes for port cities, from the phenomenon of gentrification to the tourism and fishing industries. The film also sheds light on the country’s past, among other things, the relationship maintained with former colonies or the memory of the Carnation Revolution.

Supported by Cinematheque of Portugal, the program offers cross-perspectives blending heritage cinema with more contemporary works to capture stories and cinematic forms that question the Lisbon filmmakers of yesterday and today. Where is this street? Ou sans avant ni après (2022) echoes Paulo Rocha’s The Green Years (1969), a cinematic manifesto of Portuguese cinema novo, imbued with freshness and freedom. Julio, 19, comes from the countryside of his hometown to Lisbon to try his luck as a shoemaker.

We also find the latest film by the famous director Basil da Cunha, a witness to the dynamism of Portuguese cinema, with O Fim do Mundo (2019). After an 8-year stint in a correctional facility, Spira returns to Reboleira, a slum in the process of being destroyed on the outskirts of Lisbon. Organic cinema and choreography coordinated with the residents of the neighborhood. Programming does not forget to evoke freedom of expression with the status of women and gender issues. The short film Um caroço de Abacate (2022) by Ary Zara shows on screen the encounter of a trans woman and a man on the streets of Lisbon.
