More than 2 billion genetically modified mosquitoes released

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has allowed the release of more than two billion genetically modified mosquitoes in California and Florida, aiming to combat diseases such as dengue and Zika virus.

According to data published by tameteo, the pilot project is a product of British biotechnology company Oxitec, which specializes in biological pest control. The project is an extension of a successful experiment carried out in the Keys Archipelago in 2021.

Oxitec plans to release 2.4 billion non-biting Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are genetically modified to produce only viable offspring. When males reproduce, they will pass the self-limiting gene on to the next generation. In this way, the Aedes aegypti population will become overburdened with males, resulting in a population decline.
